Southern Ohio Correctional Facility Prison Riot Memorial, “Dedicated to the courage and perseverance displayed by those whose sacrifices will not be forgotten.” The Memorial was created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the of Ohio’s Lucasville Prison Riot.
Dimensions: H 20’ x L 60’ x W 30’
Materials: Limestone walls, basalt inverted pyramid, dichroic glass spire
The goals of the memorial are to: commemorate the event, honor the riot victims, and help the survivors heal from their losses. The segmented dark basalt stone wedge honors those killed. The glass spire celebrates the human spirit and reflects our hopes for the future while recognizing life’s fragility.
The design and creation of the memorial was a collaboration between Canneto Studios. the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation (ODRC), its Director Reginald Wilkinson, and resident architect Tiwo Osansanya.
The construction was performed by ODRC inmates The stone elements were fabricated by North Shore Stone, glass and steel by Goldray Glass and DeFabCo.
In 2020, the memorial was struck by lightning destroying the laminated glass spire. The laminated glass was replaced with plates of dichroic glass attached to a stainless-steel frame - grounded with a lightning rod cable.
